•
City of Mounds View
• December 9, 1986
Page Two
less than 5% passing the #200 sieve. This fill should then be
compacted to a minimum of 98% of Standard Proctor density (ASTM:D698) .
On October 28 and 29, 1986, we observed the soils exposed during and
after the completed mass excavation. We placed a series of shallow
hand auger borings within the exposed soils to aid in judging the
localized subsurface soil conditions. The soils were visually and
manually classified in general accordance with ASTM:D2488 and estimates
were made of their strength properties.
Our hand auger borings and observations indicated all fill and organic
soils had been removed from the tennis court area. The exposed soils
consisted of fine grained waterbearing sand. These soils appeared in a
relatively dense condition and were judged suitable for proper support
of the planned construction. In addition, our observations indicated
approximately 51 oversize was provided beyond each edge of the Tennis
Court. This judgment was based on location information provided by the
contractor in the field.
During our observation, we were requested by the contractor to comment
on the use of one-site sandy fill soils. We obtained a sample of the
soil and performed a mechanical analysis. Based on the attached
• analysis results, we recommended not using the soil for fill placement,
as it does not meet the recommended gradational requirements.
It is our understanding the excavation has been filled to subgrade
elevation. However, to date compaction testing has not been performed
on the fill soils. We recommend that prior to surfacing, compaction
testing be performed on these soils to document the density of the
fill . We would be available to perform the this testing at your
request.
If you have any further questions or if we could be of any further
assistance, please feel free to contact me at 641-9405.
Very truly yours,
St=ven J Olson, C.E.
411/
. !/ .ew
i
Jeffery K Voyen, P.E.
Manager, Soils & Geology Dept
SJO/JKV/rjr
cc: 1-Mary Anderson Construction
Attn: Fred Haas
