MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks and Recreation Commission
41/1 FROM: Bruce K. Ander. so , A cto
Parks , Recreation lip. orgy y
DATE: May 20, 1986 V
RE: Monthly Staff Report - May, 19: :--J
The following issues and programs are outlined to provide the
Commission with a better overview of our department' s day to day
operations. Each of the listed items are strictly informational
and not intended for formal Commission action .
1 . Solar Power Lighting - Enclosed is a brochure we received
from one of the local playground representatives regarding
solar powered lighting fixtures. I think this has fascinat-
ing potential with a number of applications in the City' s
park system. The first two applications that come to mind
would be the Silver View Park and Greenfield Park trail sys-
tems. Due to the difficulty of stringing electrical wire
along the entire trail system, possibly a solar lighting sys-
tem would be an ideal application. The other possibility, on
a portable basis, would be to light the amphitheater and/or
Festival in the Park events, where temporary lighting would
be advantageous.
. 2 . Arts in the Parks - As you are aware , Mary Saarion has
received a grant from the State Arts Council to present four
programs in the Silver View Park amphitheater this summer .
Staff has included a flyer for your information . We look
forward to doing a great deal of promotion for this first
time program.
3. Superball Letter - Enclosed is a letter from Frank Mazzocco
which was mailed to each of the children participating on his
superball team. This letter is a great compliment to Mary
Saarion , our Recreation/Athletic Supervisor , for all the work
she has done in creating a positive philosophy in youth
sports. We feel the letter that Frank has distributed on his
own is exactly the philosophy that we have been expounding
upon during the past 3 - 5 years.
4. ' Community Education Advisory Council - I was recently elected
Chairperson of the Mounds View Community Education Advisory
Council and will take office effective June 1 , 1986.
5. Eagle Scout Project - Staff is working with David Perkins to
complete his Eagle Scout project at Silver View Park. The
project we have proposed is to re-chip the trail loop running
adjacent to the parking lot.
6 . Flower Planting - During the past two weeks, staff has placed
11/1 geraniums in each of our City flower boxes , and we look for-
ward to their blooms in the next two months.
BKA/sll
