• <br /> CITY OF BLOOMINGTON <br /> • PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT ACCESSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS <br /> PHILOSOPHY <br /> Playground structures and/or equipment should be challenging and accessible <br /> to ALL children, including those with physical limitations and <br /> developmental delays. <br /> AGES <br /> Play structures should accommodate children between the ages of two and <br /> fourteen. A structure should consist of areas having components which are <br /> geared to various age groups and ability levels. <br /> PATHYWAY SYSTEM <br /> At least one asphalt path must be provided, leading to the playstructure. <br /> The path must be a minimum of 4' wide, should not exceed 1:20 slope and <br /> must not be located under any play equipment. <br /> POINT(S) OF ACCESS <br /> • Provide at least one accessible point of access onto structure via ramp(s) <br /> or platforms. <br /> Ramp: at the accessible point should be no steeper than 1:20 grade, and <br /> must be at least 36" wide. Handrails must be provided on both sides of <br /> ramp (as specified below). <br /> Platforms: there should be no more than one foot intervals between <br /> platforms which are used to gain access to the structure from the ground. <br /> (Steps may be substituted for platforms if they are at least two feet deep <br /> from front to back and as wide as the platforms.) Intervals between the <br /> platforms, at heights over five feet, can be greater than one foot. <br /> Provide a gradual transition from low-positioned platforms to <br /> high-positioned platforms, building to possible heights of ten feet. A <br /> variety of components should be accessible by way of these platforms <br /> systems. <br /> HANDRAILS <br /> Handrails must be placed at the standard height and also one-half that <br /> height on all open sided platforms, ramps, and bridges, etc. , which are <br /> four feet or higher. Handrails must be 1 1/2" in diameter. Open or closed <br /> • wood walls, vertical metal bars, or curved hand-hold bars are acceptable <br /> alternatives to handrails. <br /> (over) <br />
