411
The attached sketch shows a possible alignment of a proposed
watermain to the park building under consideration. The main
would be extended from the existing watermain on County Road I
just south of the south curb.
Two alternatives were considered. Alternate A would consist of
installing a 6" watermain with a hydrant near the building. This
would provide domestic flow, along with plenty of water for rink
flooding and possible future ballfield sprinkling. The sprinkler
control system could be installed in the proposed building for
security reasons. While this alternate provides the most
advantages, it also offers a disadvantage in that the main may
have to be flushed occasionally because it is a dead end.
However, rink flooding in the winter and ballfield watering in
the summer may largely alleviate that problem.
The attached cost estimate assumes that the watermain could be
installed in the existing roadway alignment with the contractor
salvaging and reusing roadway materials so that there are no
restoration costs.
Alternate B considers the possibility of installing a 2" water
service to the building. This would, of course, provide no fire
protection or possibility of expansion for a ballfield sprinkler
system. It would, however, provide adequate domestic service to •
the building and reasonable rink flooding capabilities. The
estimated cost of about $13, 100 would be less than $3,000 less
than the 6" watermain system due to the easier means of
connection and lack of a hydrant.
Alternative routings of the proposed watermain could be
considered. If the watermain was routed through the turf areas,
additional restoration costs would be incurred, but scheduling
with the proposed parking lot, curb and paving would not be an
issue. In addition, it may be more convenient to develop a
sprinkler system for the ballfields with the control system more
centrally located near the northeast corner of the parking lot in
a separate small shed.
Although a connection to the watermain in Lake Court Drive is
physically possible, the costs would not be expected to be less
than the cost estimate provided herein due to significant
restoration costs and a probable need to cut the pavement to make
the connection.
