MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL
_
FROM: MARY SAARI ON, DIRECTOR1NFOR1' /1AT1ON
PARKS , RECREATION AND FORESTRY
DATE: PARK SECURITY TASK FORCE
Topics come up periodically from residents , commissioners , staff
and councilmembers regarding safety in the parks. These issues ,
including hazards , lighting needs , vandalism and breaking curfew,
all fall under the general concern of "security in the parks" .
Rather than deal with each issue separately, staff wishes to develop
a total program to provide security in the parks. A task force
made up of the Police Chief , Parks , Recreation and Forestry
Director, concerned residents and interested Park and Recreation
Commission members could devise a total plan to deal with park
security in a coordinated effort. Possibilities may include :
citizen watch groups , park patrols , security lighting in the
parks, education of park rules and regulations , and signage.
The Parks and Recreation Commission agreed that such a committee
would be advantageous and further information and discussion will be
• on the agenda for the July 28 meeting.
Input by Councilmembers is certainly welcome and representation on
the committee is encouraged. I will be open to discussion on this
matter at the agenda meeting.
MS/SL
