t <br />playground program which has the philosophy of <br />open playgrounds, freedom of choice, flexibility <br />and decision-making would be offered. This would <br />allow the participants to choose which program to <br />participate. Commissioners were reluctant to <br />change the traditional program which has been so <br />popular throughout the ages, yet were aware of <br />Council member Trude concern regarding the <br />security of people at the parks. This seemed a <br />good compromise, leaving the decision to those <br />registering. Motion was made by Councilmember <br />Long to advise staff to offer both programs. <br />Motion was seconded by Chair Burmeister. Motion <br />passed, 4 ayes, 0 nays. (Commissioner Starr left <br />the meeting early). <br />MVCT FUND- <br />RAISER: Director Saarion noted that the MVCT was <br />sponsoring a big event as a fund raiser for this <br />years production of "Oliver". There are two buses <br />full of people signed up for the day at the <br />Casino. Should be a good profit for the MVCT. <br />IMPACT INFO: Director Saarion shared information regarding <br />department activities which impact the community. <br />YOUTH SPORT <br />PHILOSOPHY: Director Saarion reviewed the philosophy of the <br />department regarding youth sports and the keen <br />interest and goal. Information distributed to <br />coaches was given out for review as well as basic <br />ideals such as enjoyment and good self esteem, <br />skill development, new interests and friends, good <br />values and fair play. More info later. <br />UPDATE ON <br />OTHER REC <br />ACTIVITIES: Director Saarion reviewed the activities of the <br />Garden Club, MVCT, Festival Committee, RSC, Focus <br />2000 teams and others. <br />ADJOURNMENT: Motion was made by Commission Dentz to adjourn the <br />meeting, seconded by Chair Burmeister.
