Parks and Recreation and Forestry Commission Meeting Minutes <br /> November 20, 2008 <br /> 6:30 PM <br /> <br />1. Call to Order at 6:34 PM <br /> Roll Call: Kunz, Kroeger, Arel, Long, Peterson, Palm <br /> Staff Present: Dazenski, Wriskey <br /> <br />2. Approval of minutes from the October 23, 2008 meeting. Motion to approve by Long, 2nd by Arel. Motion Passed 6-0. <br /> <br />3. Public Input - Citizens are encouraged to speak to the Parks and Recreation and Forestry Commissioners on issues of concern. No residents present <br /> <br />4. Rick Wriskey, City Forester, Update: <br /> Provided Program summary for 2008 <br /> Tree City USA-26th year <br /> Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm losses=50, other removals due to hazard or nuisance=31 <br /> New planted trees=88 <br /> Approximately 60 trees sold at city tree sale <br /> 200-300 site visits <br /> 2008 tree challenges: ash borer at Silver View Park, low rainfall, two-lined chestnut borer high in oak trees, pine trees threatened by bark beetles <br /> Possibly use city board, MV Matters, and local newspapers to advise to water trees during summer months, or even include flyer in with the city water bill. <br /> Encourage Rick to attend Town Hall Meeting in April <br />Commissioner Aukee present 7:10 PM <br /> Discussed checking into Greenwood Drive as residents had complaints about trees blocking signage near park <br /> <br />Hillview Park: If sidewalk is installed it would be about 4 feet to the base of the trees. <br />With lane and curbing cut to about 12 inches below existing grade, it would endanger the existing tree on the street side and make susceptible to high winds and blowing over and result <br /> in root loss. <br />With plowing, etc, these trees would be stressed and compromised with regard to a stability <br />Suggested by City Forester (speaking without a site visit and basing off of maps) to remove and plant new trees north of the proposed sidewalk. <br /> Request City Forester to do a site visit and report findings and recommendations regarding Hillview Park trees both on North Side of Hillview and Greenwood <br /> <br />5. YMCA Update: Dazenski <br /> 2nd session of fall session started <br /> Cookies with Santa Dec 19th 12:30-2:00, <br /> Drop off for shopping Dec. 19th 12:30-4:00 $10 per child ages 5-9 <br /> Ice rinks open Dec. 20th weather permitting. Started flooding 11/20/08 <br /> Ice skating lessons at Groveland Park <br />
