REPORTS <br />Flaherty/Gunn To Approve the June 27, 2005 City Council Meeting <br />Ayes-5 <br />Nays-0 <br />Motion carried. <br />A. Reports of Mayor and Council <br />Council Member Gunn stated that the Festival in the Park Golf Tournament is scheduled for <br />August 20, 2005 and the Festival in the Park is scheduled to take place on August 21, 2005. She <br />that they are planning a Battle of the Bands after the parade, in the park, noting that any teens <br />with a local band that are interested in competing should contact her or Jim Schwalbe. She stated <br />that the festival would also include a Flea Market and Fireworks. She stated that the parade is <br />scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. adding that the parade route would begin and end at the Business <br />Park and provided an overview of the route. <br />Council Member Thomas stated that this is a follow-up to the discussion Council had with <br />regards to some of the difficulties with the fireworks ordinance. She stated that she had some <br />• conversations with the Legislative Author noting that even though he is firmly supportive that <br />fireworks should be purchasable year round, it was never his intent to prohibit Cities from being <br />able to restrict it to permit structures. She stated that they are under discussion and would be in <br />contact with Jim to determine what should be done legislatively to ensure that Cities have full <br />authority and flexibility to do what they need to at the legislative level. <br />Mayor Marty stated that he received a call from Dorothy Trinka who is a member of the <br />Supporters of De La Renaissance of Haiti. He explained that she wanted to set up a meeting with <br />him and the City Administrator. He stated that he and Director Ericson met with them today <br />adding that they have been invited to attend the Council Work Session on Monday, August 1, <br />2005 to discuss facts of Haiti with the Council. He stated that over half of the population is <br />unemployed and they are trying to solicit for assistance and donations. He stated that they are <br />also putting on a Haitian Buffet on Saturday, August 27~' at the Fairview Park Recreation Center, <br />609 29~' Avenue North, Minneapolis from Noon to 6:00 p.m. He stated that for five years and <br />under it would be free; 6-12 years would be $5.00 and 13 years and older would be $10.00. He <br />stated that the City does not have a budget for benevolent contributions noting that the City could <br />volunteer to help with the buffet. He indicated that the City could also help by donating items <br />such as typewriters, hospital equipment, soap, cleaning supplies, medicine, eye glasses, <br />mattresses, furniture, motorcycles, water pumps, computers, food and clothing. He stated that <br />they are .having a yard sale, August 12-13, 2005 noting that he wanted to give the Council a <br />heads up that they would be present at the Work Session for a brief presentation. <br />C7 <br />
