MEMO TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Director of Public Works/Community Development
DATE: January 20, 1983
SUBJECT: RESOLUTION APPROVING THE APPOINTMENT OF TIMOTHY
J. PITTMAN AS PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE PERSON
Attached is a copy of Resolution No. 1559 for Council's consid-
eration as it relates to the hiring of Timothy J. Pittman as a
Public Works Maintenance Person.
As previously discussed with the Council, staff was requested to
fill a vacancy for a maintenance person in our Sewer Department.
We were looking for an individual with a minimum of three years
experience in the sewer and street construction or maintenance
areas, and an individual who was capable of also working in our
other maintenance areas such as water and park maintenance. An
advertisement was placed in the St. Paul and Minneapolis Sunday
want ad sections along with the New Brighton Bulletin. We
received nearly 60 applications for the position and preliminary
screening was conducted by myself and Mr. Kardell to narrow the
selection process down to the 10 or 15 most qualified candidates
from the 15 most qualified personnel. We contaced 6 people, 5
lI of them arranged for appointments and appeared at the interview.
it was conducted by Bruce Anderson, Gary Kardell and myself on
November 30, 1982. During the preliminary screening process,
references of the 10 most qualified individuals were also checked.
Mr. Pittman brings to the City some talents that we at the staff
level feel will be very complimentary to our maintenance depart-
ment. Mr. Pittman is a Mounds View resident and has previous
experience working in the parks and recreation maintenance depart-
ment during the years 1974 to 1977 as a part time employee.
Mr. Pittman entered the U.S. Army in 1977 and has spent his time
as a mechanic in the motor pool doing a number of miscellaneous
jobs relating to equipment maintenance, carpentry and masonry.
After the interview process was completed, Mr. Kardell, Mr. Anderson
and myself discussed the applicant's capabilities, strong and week
points and concluded the following recommendation to hire Mr. Pittman.
If you have any questions concerning the process and/or the quali-
fication of Mr. Pittman, please contact myself or Mr. Kardell.
JCJ/bc
attachment
cc: Bruce Anderson
Gary Kardell
Don Pauley
