Absence from school due to illness roblems or environmental <br />capping conditions, social and emotional p <br />om the <br />conditions limi idedhand mayabilityto <br />tbenefit r <br />thechild'spotential,stational <br />experiences p <br />Ein three target schools, the per - <br />In Independent school District school <br />centage of children absent from school for ten or more days during <br />the 1982-83 school year is as follows: <br />Elementary Grades I - 6 <br />24% <br />Junior High Grades 7 - 8 33% <br />Senior High Grades 9 - 12 39% <br />Each of these students was absent for at least 5.5� of the school <br />year. <br />Current levels of staffing do not provide for adequate identifica- <br />tion, assessment and intervention necessary to limit or prevent <br />future absence from school. <br />This proposal seeks to develop -a method of assessment to be used <br />for children in the target schools who are chronically absent from <br />school, to identify the patterns and causes of those absences. <br />gIn <br />addition, emphasis will be placed on developing and impe <br />mentiintervention strategies aimed at limiting or preventing future absence <br />from school. <br />The development of programs focusing on prevention of chronic ab- <br />senteeism have been largely ignored In recent health and educa- <br />tional planning.
