Anderson, Director
Parks, Recreation and Forestry
DATE: December 2.2, 1983
RR: MEED Grant
Staff has submitted another proposal and received initial funding
for one additional HEED Grant person. The individual that we
would like to have employed under the HEED Grant, is Ms. Le Ann
Linder, as a wellness coordinator or lifestyle/health and fitness
coordinator. As I'm sure you noticed in the January/February
Newsletter, we have been working with the City of New Brighton in
developing a lifestyle/health and fitness program with the objec-
tive of building a community of healthy, active people. Part of
that program will include wellness education and activity class
activities that will help motivate individuals to make healthier
lifestyle choices.
Ms. Linder has a background in health and physical education from
the University of Minnesota and Bemidji State University. Her
past experience includes: An instructor at St. Olaf College for
three years, and head women's coach of tennis and volleyball.
We feel very fortunate to have
background within our department
her in further development of a
someone of LeAnn's expertise and
and look forward to working with
wellness program.
Ms, Linder will be making a presentation to the Parks and Recrea-
tion Commission on Thursday, January S at a special Parks and
Recreation Commission meeting, regarding the wellness and healthy
lifestyle program and hope to make a similar presentation to the
City Council as to how staff envisions the healthyWlifestyle pro -
and
gram tying in with local industry, the Cit7 of
the Mounds View residents.
Once again, as you are aware, the HEED Grant does not cost the
City any money and offers us the opportunity to explore some new
program areas which we will be able to maintain through our ex-
isting staff once they are established in the future. Staff will
be on hand to review any questions or comments you may regarding
the HEED Program and Ms. Linder's background, at Monday evening's
Council meeting.
RCOMMENDATION: To authorize taff to
in MS.
der as
aEheal festyle/wellness scoordinator ato be paid nforinout of
the HEED Grant application.
BKA/sll
