_2-
A. ALIViln cs (conL. )
A. rFewer Oil Changes and Imr.oved L'ngi.nc vicar. Because propane 1
borne— d z— n a gaseous state as compared to the liquid form
of gasoline, engine oil does not become contaminated with
sludge and varnish deposits, thus, doubling or tripling
the useful life of an oil change. Also, because of the
elimination of combustion deposits and improved lubricating
ability for engine oil the normal wear to an engine is
reduced.
5. Reduced Exhaust Emissions. Propane burning vehicles emit
15 gnific antl.y reduced amounts of pollutants which, if the
vehicle is not on a dual system, allows for the removal of
the pollution control devices on the engine.
6. Elimination of Pilferage. Because propane is used in a
sealed --full pilferage, spillage, and evaporation
arevirtually eliminated.
7. Propane is Safer than Gasoline. Propane can be considered
safer than gasoline for four reasons:
a. Propane tanks are over 20 times stronger than gasoline
tanks in resistance to a collision.
b. Should the fuel line rupture, propane systems have (
built-in safety devices and shut-off valves to prevent
leakage.
c. In tests conducted by the South San Francisco Police
Department using both rifles and handguns it was
determined that, "...propane tanks could effectively
resist the impact of an handgun bullet..." and when
pierced, "...would produce a high-pressure leak and,
if ignited, would produce a torch -type flame much
easier to control...". They also observed that,
"...if. the vehicle were set afire by a Molotov
cocktail, the relief valve would function, preventing
an cxplosiun."
d. Propane is less flammable than gasoline.
B. Disadvantages
1. I,oss of Power. Propane has fewer BTUs than gasoline which
resu is in an overall loss of power (on the highway) of
about 10%.
