MEMO TO: Clerk -Administrator. and City Council
I
FROM: Director of Public Works/Community Development
DATE: May 1, 1984
SUBJECT: WELL NO. 2 NATURAL GAS MOTOR
As you know, Dick Schmidlin and Tim Pittman of our staff have
dismantled the natural gas motor in Well No. 2 pump house. Staff
has analyzed three alternative motors with back up systems for
Well No. 2.
ALTERNATIVE NO. 1 - Restore existing natural gas engine.
The restoration will include gaskets, barrings, rings,
liners, seals, rebuild governor, rebuild oil pump, labor and
miscellanous parts. The estimated total cost of restoring
the natural gas engine in $6,500.00.
The proposed back up power system for this alternative is
propane. This system includes a 500 gallon propane tank
installed by Texgas by Well House No. 2. A manually
operated transfer switch will be installed to change
from natural gas to propane. The manually operated
switch will automatically shut off the natural gas and turn
on the propane and vice versa. The estimated cost of this
back up is $1,000.00. Installing the 500 gallon propane
tank is cheaper than installing a line underground from the
existing thousand gallon propane tank because Texgas
installs the propane tank at no cost to the City. They also
understand that the installation is for standby power. The
back up cost includes a full tank of propane.
Therefore, the total estimated cost of restoring the natural
gas engine with a propane back up is $7,500.00.
ALTERNATIVE NO. 2 - New electric motor. This alternative
includes installation of a new electric motor with starter
and electrical control panel. The estimated cost is
$15,000.00. An emergency standby generator to run the
electric motor if there is a power failure is estimated to
cost $7,000.00.
Therefore, the estimated total cost of a new electric motor
and standby power source is $22,000.00.
ALTERNATIVE NO. . - Used electric motor. This alternative
includes a used electric motor, used starter, and used
control panel. The estimated cost for used equipment is
$9,000.00. An emergency generator to run the used electric
motor if there is a power failure costs approximately
$7,000.00.
Therefore, the estimated total cost of Alternative
No. 3 is $16,000.00.
