MEMO TO: Mounds View City
FROM: Bruce K. Anderson
Parks, Recreation
DATE: May 31, 1984
RE: Van Purchase
Staff has been reviewing the feasibility of purchasing one addi-
tional vehicle to serve our summer JPTA employees. The Federal
Surplus Properties Division recently acquired two vans which seat
twelve people. They would be ideal for not only transporting
equipment, but also "bodies" during the twelve week summer JPTA
program. The City currently has no vehicle to move our part-time
summer employees on a regular basis; so what we do is drop
individuals off at a work site in the morning and pick them up at
noon and then we take them back to the site after lunch The ob-
vious problems that this causes are lack of tools or equipment,
poor supervision and on occasion, employees waiting for rides
of ter their project is completed.
The cost of the van from the Federal Surplus is $450.00 and one
in particular is in relatively good condition. The body is in
fair condition and mechanically it appears to be relatively tight
as observed by City Mechanic Schmidlin. Staff would like to pro-
pose that authorization be given to purchase a van from the Fed-
eral Surplus program for $450.00 plus an additional $100.00 for
general repair and modification such as equipment boxes, andminor
mechanical repair. The monies need to be budgeted from the
City's contingency account as there are no dollars allocated for
the purchase of a van.
Staff feels that in addition to utilizingthe van for our summer
JPTA program,( which benefits the City by over $18,000.00 in
labor), the vehicle could be used on a year round basis with our
recreation programs.
Staff will be on hand at Monday evening's meeting to review this
proposal and discuss the specifics of how the van could best
serve the City.
RECOMMENDATION: To authorize staff to purchase a used van from
Federal Surplus Properties in the amount of $450.00 plus an addi-
tional $100.00 for equipment repair with monies to be budgeted
from the City contingency account.
BKA/sl l
