MEMO TO: Mounds View City Council
FROM: Bruce K. Anderson, to.
Parks, Recreation a d ry
DATE: Spraying of City Park Sites
We have had a number of requests from residents to initiate some
type of week control program within our City parks system; speci-
fically to eliminate dandelions. As you are aware, staff has
proposed this item in the budget for the last three years, and
due to its high expense, it has not been deemed a priority. As a
second alternative, we have contacted a private lawn maintenance
firm to solicit bids for providing weed control only at four
sites; Lakeside Park, Lambert Park, Hillview Park and City Hall
Park. Total cost to do all four park sites would be $2,015.10.
At this time, staff is not recommending that we expend this
amount of dollars for weed control for a one time application,
but is rather providing the attached sheets to give you some
idea of the costs involved in a crab grass and weed control pro-
gram on a small basis. Hopefully this information will be of
( some benefit to you should you receive any calls from residents
requesting why we have not done a better job in erradicating dan-
delions within the City's park system.
Staff will be addressing this issue once again in the 1985 bud-
get, but at this time, our recommendation is to develop an entire
turf maintenance program including: Fertilization, pre and post-
immergent weed control, as well as aeriating, mowing and over -
seeding. The costs of such a program are in the $10,000 per year
range and at this time, it appears it may be cost prohib.tive.
Should you have any questions regarding the attached proposal
forms, feel free to contact myself directly at ext.Y41.
BKA/sll
Attachment
