MEMO TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUN
FROM: CLERK-ADMINISTRATO
DATE: FEBRUARY 28, 1985
SUBJECT: SUBURBAN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
I recently met with Mr. Jim Block, Public Relations and
Marketing Director for the Suburban Area Chamber of Commerce
who was requesting that the City become a member of this
organization.
To provide you with a little historical perspective on our
membership in this organization, in 1980 when I started with
the City, the City was a member of the Suburban Area Chamber
of Commerce, however, due to the fact that the then
Executive Director of the Chamber assumed a very strong
lobbying position on behalf of member businesses, even when
they were in conflict with the City of Mounds View, the City
rescinded its membership from that organization. Mr. Block
advised me that the new Executive Director of the Chamber,
who is the former director of the St. Paul Winter Carnival
Association, has caused for a change in the operational
philosophy of the organization to occur and the organization
currently takes a mediator's role in any situations where
members find themselves in conflict with another member of
the organization.
A number of Chamber activities which Mr. Block felt would be
advantageous to the City of Mounds View were:
1. Being the member of a Chamber servicing nearly
all of suburban Ramsey County and a few suburbs
in Anoka and Washington Counties.
2. The Chamber's Public Education Program which would
make available workshops to all employees of all
members of the Chamber on such issues as time
management, Marketing In The 80's, and seminars
on building partnerships between government and
private business.
3. Community business shows held after normal working
hours allowing members to become familiar with
other members businesses.
4. Product service shows held throughout the Chamber
area at various shopping centers and malls.
5. Participation in a variety of committees as out-
lined in the attached flyer.
