MEMO TO: Clerk -Administrator and City Council <br />FROM: Director of Public Works/Community Development <br />DATE: November 24, 1986 <br />SUBJECT: REPAIR OF JUDICIAL DITCH NO. 1, BRANCH NO. 5 <br />Survey work for the subject project is completed. I will bring <br />one set of preliminary plans which includes ten pages to the <br />agenda session. <br />The survey work confirms one of my fears about this project. The <br />survey work indicates that if Judicial Ditch No. 1, Branch No. 5, <br />is repaired or cleaned to it original cross section and grade, <br />the problems will not totally be solved because Judicial Ditch <br />No. 1 from approximately the intersection of Sherwood Road and <br />Jackson Drive to approximately Hillview Road and Quincy Street <br />has also silted in, if we repair Judicial Ditch No. 1, Branch <br />No. 5, from approximately the intersection of County Road I and <br />Bona Road to approximately the intersection of Sherwood Road and <br />Jackson Drive without repairing the portion of Judicial Ditch <br />No.l mentioned above, water will back up and stand in the ditch <br />area all the way through Greenfield Park. I do not belei.ve we <br />will be happy with the results of the repair project if we only <br />clean Judicial Ditch No. 1, Branch No. 5. <br />The amount of repair work necessary to clean Judicial Ditch No. <br />1, Branch No. 5, is less than originally anticipated. We may be <br />able to clean Judicial Ditch No. 1 and Judicial Ditch No. 1, <br />Branch No. 5, for the same amount of money as originally <br />estimated to repair Judicial Ditch No. 1, Branch No. 5. <br />Therefore, I recommend directing the Engineer to survey Judicial <br />Ditch No. 1 from approximately Sherwood Road and Jackson Drive to <br />approximately Hillview Road and Quincy Street. At Hillview Road <br />and Quincy Street, Judicial Ditch No. 1 enters a storm sewer and <br />flows to Rice Creek. <br />The schedule for this project is tight. We plan to publish the <br />advertisement for bid on December 10, 1986, and open bids on <br />Friday, January 9, 1987. <br />RECOMMENDATION: I recommend authorizing Donohue & Associates to <br />survey Judicial Ditch No. I from approximately Sherwood Road and <br />Jackson Drive to approximately Hillview Road and Quincy Street. <br />SWT/bac <br />
