December 11, 1986
Page 3
Our experience with maintenance contracts has been such that
their worth has been proven. Therefore, I asked for
quotations on maintenance contracts along with initial
purchase prices.
In evaluating the proposals I found that each vendor was
proposing basically the same basic computer unit but they
priced the prices differently. On the spreadsheet I
developed, a subtotal computer is listed. For all vendors
this includes the system unit at 640 KB of memory, one floppy
diskette drive and one 20 MB hard disk drive, a monochrome
monitor and a keyboard. Ameridata is the low bidder at'
$2,673.
Two vendors had seperate charges for installation and shipping
and two included installation and shipping in the price of the
product. Shipping and installation is listed separately on
the worksheet.
The largest variance in pricing was printers. These varied
from $580 to $1,050. The printers proposed were:
Unisys Model 115 $ 580
Ameridata:
Okidaf-a Model 293 $ 780
Toshiba Model 34'i $1,050
Computoservice:
Texas Instruments Model 855 $ 773
Entre Computer:
Okidata Model 293 $ 841
In order to evaluate these printers staff learned quite a bit
about printers. All printers quoted are dot matrix printers.
The printed image is formed by a series of pins on the print
head striking an inked ribbon. The number of pins it the
print head has a direct relationship on the quality of the
printed characters. The more pins the better the quality of
the print. This was very evident when we received print
samples for each printer. Another marked difference was the
quality of graphics each printer could produce. This is
important in that our coal is to be able to send the budget
book to the printer and to make graphics that pan be used in
oral and written presentations. The higher the print quality
the higher the price of the printers. Staff recommends
purchase of the Toshiba 341 and the Okidata 293 at $1,050 and
$780 respectively. These printers are comparable in quality
to the better quality printer we purchased from Computoservice
at a cost of $1,150 each for our large computer system.
