ju, I
MEMO TO: Mayor & Council
FROM: Finance Director -Treasurer Brager
DATE: November 18, 1988
RE: PURCHASE OF PERSONAL COMPUTER FOP. PT"KS AVr'
RECREATION DEPARTMENT
When the present computer system was purchased from
computoservice, Inc. gistration6andthe
schedulingzacted softwarefor
for the Parks
development of rag
& Recreation Department. The software was delivered to the City
in the Spring of 1987. Throughout 1987 and 1988 Parks &
Recreation staff and I have dealt with Computoservice staff
regarding problems with the software they developed for us. To
enumerate all of the problems encountered is not possible in a
short memo. The problems are such that registrations have been
lost and class lists are inaccurate. Parks & Recreation staff
began to manually keep track of registrations.
In mid October 1988, Computoservice "threw in the towel" and
—, offered a full refund on the amounts paid for
the
e softwareoffered
sand
uggested we find other software. Compry
assistance in reviewing software and offered a personal computer
at cost should the software chosen require personal
computer
different than the one presently used by the Parks
ion
Department.
Parks & Recreation Department staff has conducted a search for
registration. and scheduling software. This search involved
looking at approximately a half -dozen software packages. After
evaluating software packages they have chosen a package called
"Student Manager" from Aceware System:. in Manhatten, Kansas.
software
Presently the City of Columbia ricitis using r
Pat:ts in their recreation
successfully for registering p`'
programs. Cost of this software package is $995.
The requirements for a personal computer to rut. the "Student
Manager" program are: 512 KB Ram memory, a 40 MB hard disk drive
and an 80286 processor. The present Parks & Recreation personal
computer does not meet these requirements: it does not have a
B hard
aa8286 0new Personal rcomputer must belpurchased tosrun rthe program
fore,
and has only a
chosen.
Computoservice has offered a AST Premium, Model 145 personal
computer at their cost of $1,915 installed. It meets all the
re_,uirement to run the software.
Serveral area computer retailers sell the AST brand. The best
price I could find on the same machine was $2,345 installed ifrom
PC Solutions. It would appear that Computoservice's price
competitive.
