A
y emu. .
1
33 STATE OF MLVNESOTA
OFFICE nF nm Gov tAtl'UN
RUDY PERPICH ST. PAUL 55155
GOVERNOR
bLQ2esn4.r_RstdY_FUalr-h
INFORIATION
0NLYYP"
Now that we have won the right to host the 1992 Super Bowl,
Minnesota has staked its claim as the sports capital of the
world over the next four years. More than 40 major sporting
events will occur in Minnesota between now and 1993, resulting
in more than $200 million in economic benefit for our state.
Among the events the people of Minnesota can look forward to
are the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival and the NCAA Ice Hockey
Final Four in 1990, the International special Olympics, the
International Figure Skating Championships and the U.S. Open
Golf Championship in 1991, the NCAA Basketball Final Four and
the Super Bowl in 1992, and the world Masters Games in 1993.
This fantastic line-up could not have happened without the
persistent, dedicated effort of people in dozens of Minnesota
communities. It is fitting that these events will reward that
effort by providing a substantial boost to the economy and the
civic pride of communities all across our state.
Five years ago in my 1984 State of the State address, I pledged
that Minnesota would go all-out to promote and produce the most
successful and comprehensive sports program in the world. From
the start, the people of Minnesota have worked together in
public -private partnership to fulfil: that pledge.
Before 1984 was over, we had a 21-person task force working to
bring professional basketball to Minnesota. We were building
the first of our world -class amateur sports facilities --the
Giants' Ridge Ski Center in Biwabik. And we had made our first
bid to host the Super Bowl.
Then in 1987, we created the Minnesota Amateur Sports
Commission, and appropriated more than $29 million dollars for
sports facilities and associations. This money leveraged an
additional $20 million in city, county and private sector
resources.
Today, those years of planning and effort have proven to be an
excellent investment in the future economy, pride and physical
health of Minnesota.
We now have a professional basketball team that will begin play
this fall --and will soon have its own arena in downtown
Minneapolis.
AN ECUAL OPPORTUNITY E.MPLOYEP
