-2-
We have world -class amateur sports facilities throughout
Minnesota, hosting events which will generate at least four .
dollars in economic development activity for every dollar we
have invested, infusing tens of millions of dollars into our
statewide economy.
And we have the Super Bowl coming in 1992, which will create
tens of millions more dollars for our e,nnnmv, and more
publicity and worldwide recognition for our state than we could
ever hope to obtain through advertising.
We intend to maintain our national and international leadership
position in the hosting of sporting events, by continuing to
expand, the scope and quality of our athletic facilities. Cur
next important goal is the 1994 World Cup of Soccer, which is
many times bigger than the Super Bowl in worldwide impact. To
host this event, we will need to expand the stadium and the
National Sports Center in Blaine. The Minnesota Amateur Sports
Commission will be requesting approximately $20 million next
year for this expansion and for the other facilities
development necessary to keep our amateur sports program on
track.
Along with the significant economic benefits which directly
translate into increased revenues and jobs for Minnesotans, our
sports program enhances our community spirit and quality of
life in this state. Community and statewide events for the
entire family --such as the Star of the North Games taking place "t
this week in Burnsville --are also part of our effort. And from
Blaine to Biwabik to St. Cloud, Minnesotans of all ages are
enjoying our world -class sports facilities on a daily basis.
The result is better fitness, health and a deeper sense of
community for our citizens.
As we prepare for the dozens of major sporting events that will
benefit our economy and our civic pride, I once again want to
thank the people of Minnesota for putting in the effort that
has made this our sports program a success story. Due to your
hard work, we are the sporting capital of the world.
