MEMO TO: Mike Ulrich, Public Works Foreman
FROM: Gary Kardall
DATE: December 16, 1988
SUBJECT: SEWER BACK-UP AT 5259 GREENFIELD AVENUE
JOHNSON RESIDENCE
On Thursday, December 15, 1988, Wally Mortenson and myself were
sent to 5259 Greenfield Avenue on a sewer back-up complaint. When
we arrived, we inspected manhole ;8-868 and found our line clear
and running gocd and Wally set up the jet rodder in that manhole.
I then went to manhole :8-837 in front of the residence at 5259
Greenfield Avenue. The manhole was clear and had no signs of
having been backed -up. The walls, steps and floor were clean, but
at the homeowners request, we decided to jet the line to be sure
there were no obstructions in the homeowner's service. While
Wally was cleaning the line, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson staled that the
water in the basement came uD, did some gurgling, and then went
down.. I tried to tell them the only explanation I had was that
the water coming in was in their lines and was venting for air.
They had approximately 3/4" to illof water covering their basement —
floor with basically clear water (some sewage was present, i.e.,
bits of toilet tissue, etc.). It lead me to believe the water was
stored in the sewer drain from when their softener recharged early
in the ,morning and backed out the floor when they drained their
tub. I also checked manhole 18-838 which was clear and running.
We then finished cleaning their line and had it televised. The
television report showed no major obstructions in our line.
The plumber said when he was going through their line that it was
like cutting through a mulchy swamp, but their were no roots. The
first time he said he when out 80 feet and the second time, 90
feet.
GK/BAC
