What is the State and Local Legal Center? <br />The State and Local Legal Center, a project of the Academy <br />for State and Local Government, was established in 1983 by the <br />seven major national organizations of state and local general <br />purpose government officials.1/ Governors, legislators, and <br />local government officials thought it important to find a way to <br />advance and defend the interests of state and local governments <br />within our federal system, and, specifically, to provide an <br />enhanced presence for state and local governments before the <br />Supreme Court of the United States. <br />The Academy is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation governed <br />by these organizations of state and local government elected and <br />appointed officials as their joint policy center. The executive <br />directors of the organizations serve as the Academy's Board of <br />Trustees and direct all activities of the Legal Center. <br />1/ The National Governors' Association, National Conference of <br />State Legislatures, Council of State Governments, National <br />Association of Counties, National League of Cities, U.S. <br />Conference of Mayors, and International City Management <br />Association are the trustee organizations of the State and <br />Local Legal Center. <br />
