N <br />MEMO TO: MAYOR AND CITY CO WCFROM: CLERK-ADMINISTRATO <br />(711 <br />DATE: MARCH 2, 1988 <br />SUBJECT: FIRE DEPARTMENT REQUEST FOR FUNDS <br />Attached please find a memorandum from Fire Chief Fagerstrom to <br />the three cities regarding a request to repower Ladder 9 which is <br />located at Station 1. Chief Fagerstrom indicates that the <br />current engine on this piece of equipment is in need of major <br />repairs and that a replaceme t of the current engine with new <br />equipment would be more econmically reasonable than repairing the <br />existing engine. Chief Fagerstrom has received proposals for <br />this work with the lowest of those being $17,749 Should the <br />engine be repowered for this price the City of Mounds View's <br />contribution for this expense would be $3,949.16. <br />Chief Fagerstrom is requesting that the cities agree to s <br />supplementary contribution as provided for under Article 5.6, (a) <br />of the contract between the cities and the Fire Department which <br />provides that the Fire Department may make supplementary reques�s <br />when annual budgetary appropriations are not sufficient to meet <br />expenses. The cities could take the position that they will not <br />provide a supplementary appropriation for this repair and that <br />the Department should take this out of the Contingency Account <br />which is funded to the level of $20,000.00, however, as you can <br />probably guess we would be facing a request for supplementary <br />funds later on in the year due to the fact that these repairs <br />would nearly wipe out the existing balance in the Contingency <br />Account. <br />Not wanting the Department to be operating without adequate <br />numbers of functioning equipment and not wishing to put the <br />Department in a position of coming to us with requests for funds <br />on an all too frequent basis due to the elimination of their <br />Contingency Account, I would recommend that the Council authorize <br />the payment of $3,949.16 to the Fire Department :with those funds F <br />coming out of the City of Mounds View's 1988 Contingency <br />Account.
