DATE: February 24, 1988
SUB!;.AT: Request to Repower Ladder 9
TO: Ken Irvin
Blaine A:ting City Manager
Don Pauley
Mounds Viev Clerk -Administrator
Don Busch
Spring Lake Park Clark-Treasurar
FROM: Fire Chief
We hava had continuing maintenance problems with Ladder 9 at Station 1.
Last ,year we spent a total of $6,182.92 in repairs Including the exhaust
system, carburetors (two), compressor, po--r steering, radiator recured,
and several tune-ups. The truck is old, having been delivered in 1971.
Our current dilemm- is a result of having a water leak repaired.
Antifreeze wax leaking into the crank case and we sent the truck in for
repairs. On Friday, February 15, as the truck was being driven back to
Station 1, the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero at Long Lake Road and
's Highway 10. After reaching the station, the mechanic checked the oil
sending gauge, which was working. The truck was then towed back to
Emergency Jpparatus Maintenance, Inc. in New Brighton, and the motor tore
down. The rods, bearings and crankshaft are destroyed and in the case of
the crankshaft would have to be machined. The total estimated cost of
repair to the truck approached $11,000, and we would still have the old
motor with no guarantee that something else, say the pistons, might go or
777.
The condition of the body and running gear including the aerial ladder are
good. The truck is worth salvaging. Even though it will cost more to
repower (install a new engine and related parts), I feel it is more
economical than to continue to Datch and fix the old as we have been
doing.
The latest bill for fixing the intttal voter leak an' tearing down to
discover the current problem has been quoted to me at approximatel; $4500.
(The statement has not arrived as yet.) The sums involved are really
horrendous.
A new ladder truck in today's market sells in a range from $250,000 to
$325,000 depending on options included. Hence, you can appreciate my
position that we should repair the rig.
