MESSAGE FROM CHIEF ZENDER

I am proud to present the 2025 Annual Report for the Mounds View Police Department.
Throughout this report, you will see the great work our officers and staff have done
throughout the year. This year has brought many accomplishments as well as
challenges to the police department. The equipment officers carry and use today is
current with technological advances in law enforcement and we are constantly
evaluating the equipment we use and the training we attend. We will continue to invest
in training and equipment in order for the officers to effectively and efficiently protect
and serve the community in the safest possible way. One of the major challenges this
year came to our K9 Unit.

K9 Niko was MVPD’s very first K9, faithfully serving the community for almost 10 years
from 2012-2021 alongside his handler Investigator Nick Erickson. K9 Niko retired in
2021 and enjoyed his much-deserved retirement. After 15 years, K9 Niko succumbed to
cancer and was put to rest in April. In May, K9 Grizz experienced a sudden and severe
medical emergency. After consultation with emergency veterinarians and considering
his condition, we needed to make the extremely difficult decision to euthanize K9 Grizz
and end his suffering. K9 Grizz faithfully served the community for 7 years from 2018-
2025 alongside his handler Sgt. Brian Schultes. K9 Niko and K9 Grizz will be deeply
missed but never forgotten. We will continue to strive for excellence and continue the
legacy that these two K9s built. This summer, K9 Ace needed to be medically retired
due to ongoing medical issues. K9 Ace faithfully served the community from 2022-2025
alongside his handler Officer Alex Aase. With any setback, there is something positive
to take away. Officer Aase agreed to take on a new K9 to replace K9 Ace, and we were
able to purchase our newest K9 (K9 Brandi). K9 Brandi is a dual-purpose female
German Shephard and is currently working alongside her handler, Officer Alex Aase.
