Deployments (4th quarter):
Assist Other Agency – 2300 block of Long Lake Road – Burglary/Domestic
Assault
Officer Aase assisted New Brighton PD with a K9 track at the 2300 block of Long Lake
Road. The suspect had broken into a garage and assaulted his mother and fled on food.
Officer Aase deployed K9 Brandi and attempted a track for multiple minutes. Two
drones were also deployed. After multiple minutes, K9 Brandi was unable to pick up a
track and neither drone located any heat sources. A Ramsey County K9 attempted a
track after Officer Aase and did not locate the suspect. The suspect was later located at
a gas station by Saint Anthony PD and taken into custody.
Assist Other Agency – Narcotics Sniff – Silver Lake Road / 14th Street NW
Officer Aase was requested by New Brighton Department of Public Safety for a
narcotics sniff at the intersection of Silver Lake Road and 14th Street NW.
Officer Aase responded with K9 Brandi. Upon arrival, Officer Aase was informed of
possible narcotics related activity with the vehicle, including prescription medications on
the floorboard and drug paraphernalia in plain view. Officer Aase deployed K9 Brandi on
lead. K9 Brandi performed an exterior sniff of the vehicle and did not alert to the
presence of narcotics.
Sergeant Schultes and K9 Grizz
In May of 2025, we celebrated the life and service of K9 Grizz after his unexpected loss
following a medical emergency. K9 Grizz started his service with the Mounds View
Police Department in January of 2018. He was assigned to Sergeant Schultes, and
they attended the St. Paul K9 Academy together. As a team, they were certified in
patrol operations and drug detection through the USPCA and later through TAC21.
K9 Grizz came to the MVPD as a young dog full of drive. He immediately attached to
Sgt. Schultes but was initially very reactive to any other adults and children. Through
months of socialization and environmental training, K9 Grizz developed situational
understanding and clarity. He became a friend to everyone who met him while
simultaneously developing a reputation as a “no nonsense” K9 that always rose to the
occasion. It was common for other agencies to be relieved when K9 Grizz responded to
assist, because they knew he would get the job done and keep the officers safe. He
had one of the most recognizable “barks” in the county, whether he was in the squad or
effecting the arrest of a suspect he had just tracked down.
K9 Grizz had a very active and eventful career serving the City of Mounds View. He
located and apprehended numerous wanted suspects, safely cleared homes and
buildings to keep officers out of harm’s way, de-escalated tense situations to prevent
use of force, located evidence and illegal drugs, and became a friend to all at
community outreach events.
Sergeant Schultes will continue to assist the MVPD K9 Unit with training efforts, and as
an evaluator for TAC21 K9 certification tests.
