MOUNDS VIEW PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION <br /> MEETING MINUTES <br /> Thursday, June 26, 1997 <br /> CALL TO <br /> ORDER: Acting Chair Frank Silvis called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The <br /> Commission met at Woodcrest Park at 6:30 p.m. to tour the park and <br /> observe the Community Gardens. <br /> ROLL CALL: Commission members present included Commissioners Starr, Stevenson, <br /> Gunn, and Silvis. Commissioners Dentz, Long and Burmeister were <br /> absent. Director Saarion was also present. <br /> MINUTES: Commissioner Gunn made a motion, seconded by Stevenson to <br /> approve the June minutes. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> WOODCREST <br /> PARK: Commissioners met at Woodcrest Park before the meeting to observe the <br /> Community Gardens and to discuss ways to improve the gardens next year. <br /> In addition, Commissioners observed the improvements to the park <br /> building including new siding, windows and doors. Director Saarion <br /> informed the Commission that repairs to the park building are Band-Aid <br /> affects - the building continues to deteriorate and will need to be replaced <br /> within 5 - 10 years. The joists are warping making the building sag and <br /> foundation boards are rotting. Part of this is because of the high water <br /> table at the parks. Being an all wooden building, it is more prone to be <br /> affected by frequent wet and moisture. The playground equipment is still <br /> in very good condition. It has had little graffiti and vandalism and has <br /> stood the test of time very well. The sand volleyball court at Woodcrest is <br /> used almost never and therefore Commissioner Starr made a motion <br /> seconded by Commissioner Gunn to remove the sand volleyball court <br /> and replace it with sod for a play area. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> Director Saarion reported that she had received a telephone call from <br /> resident Pam Stokes who lives at 5092 Longview Dr. She was concerned <br /> that the Community Gardens was an eyesore and wanted the Commission <br /> to think about landscaping the park to make the gardens more aesthetically <br /> pleasing. She suggested that it become something more like the Rose <br /> Gardens at Lake Harriet Park in Minneapolis. Commissioners discussed <br /> the possibilities but had a few concerns. One was that they wanted to see <br /> how the community gardens operated yet this year to see whether or not <br /> the gardens were vandalized, well kept by users, functional and what the <br />
