1 Engstrom Named Officer of the Year by Fridley Knights of Columbus
2 Mayor Sundland said he had attended the appreciation dinner where
3 the BVM Council of the Knights of Columbus had honored Captain
4 Richard Engstrom as St. Anthony's Officer of the Year. The Mayor
5 reported that in addition to the award, Captain Engstrom had been
6 given a choice of charities to whom the Knights would donate
7 $150.00. He said he had been impressed when the recipient chose
8 to split the donation between the Red Cross and the Salvation Army
9 because both organizations "had given so much help to the St.
10 Anthony community after the 1984 tornado."
11 Mayor Sundland asked Councilmember Ranallo, who is Grand Knight of
12 the Fridley Knights of Columbus Council, to convey his own and the
13 rest of the Council's gratitude for this recognition of the City
14 Police Department.
15 Makowske Percei
16 Area Plua in Tr
17 Councilmember Makowske passed around a copy of the latest AAA travel
18 guide which touted the north Minneapolis area as a good vacation
19 choice, saying she suspected this might be one of the first efforts
20 by the Association to gain more recognition for the northern
21 metropolitan area. In the same regard, Mayor Sundland reported
22 arrangements have been made to have Brooklyn Park Mayor Krautkremer
23 appear before the Council in February to lobby support for an
24 increased Association budget to continue those efforts.
25 Ranallo Reports Busy Schedule for Gopher One Call System Board
26 Members
27 The Board of Directors for the above organization has been very
28 active, Councilmember Ranallo said, setting up and taking bids for
29 this legislative mandated system. The organization is responsible
30 for identifying all underground utility, natural gas and oil lines
31 and providing such information to anyone who seeks permission to dig
32 anywhere in the state, thereby avoiding ruptures similar to that
33 which occurred in MoundsView. The Councilmember said the Board on
34 which he serves has been meeting with representatives of the area's
35 utility companies in an attempt to computerize all available grid
36 information. However, the problem still remains to identify
37 underground lines like the gas line the City encountered when they
38 were rebuilding St. Anthony Boulevard which no one knew anything
39 about. Even gas grills which residents put in, with or without the
40 gas company's knowledge, pose special problems for the system, he
41 added. The Board is now ready to take bids on the system and the
42 Councilmember indicated he anticipated there would be a lot of
43 activity from now on starting with an informational meeting in Grand
44 Rapids the following day.
4
