Consider Resolution 14-061: a Resolution Appointing the Election Judges for the 2014 <br />General Election. <br />Motion by Councilmember Jenson, seconded by Councilmember Gray, to approve the Consent <br />Agenda items. <br />Mayor Faust pointed out the City is going to issue a cigarette and tobacco license to Smoke4less <br />at 3809-3811 Stinson Boulevard, which is the location of the former hookah lounge and asked if <br />Smoke4less is aware that the City Council recently passed an Ordinance regarding electronic <br />cigarettes as well as an Ordinance pertaining to drug paraphernalia. <br />City Manager Casey replied that all current and prospective cigarette and tobacco license <br />holders, including Smoke4less, have been sent a letter regarding the Ordinances. <br />Motion carried 4-0. <br />PUBLIC HEARING - NONE. <br />REPORTS FROM <br />AND STAFF - NONE. <br />GENERAL BUSINESS OF COUNCIL. <br />A. Presentation on Fire Prevention/Education. Captain Chris Fuller and Firefighter Mattie <br />Jaros presenting. <br />Captain Fuller advised that Fire Prevention Week is held annually during the week that October <br />9s' falls to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. He stated that nationwide in 1977 <br />there were 1,098,000 structure fires and in 2013 there were 487,500 structure fires representing a <br />reduction of over half, but despite this decrease there were still 3,240 civilian deaths, an increase <br />of 13.5%, with home fires accounting for 79% of fire injuries and 85% of fire deaths. He stated <br />the Fire Department works with schools and preschoolers on fire prevention/education and have <br />developed specific curriculum per grade including EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home), poster <br />contests, station tours, and CPR training. He stated the Fire Department also works with local <br />businesses and provides hazardous materials training, fire extinguisher training, and CPR <br />training, and the Fire Department has become more involved with apartments and senior <br />buildings on fire safety. He stated the Fire Department provides free home safety inspections for <br />residents and noted these inspections are intended to provide recommendations and do not <br />include code enforcement; in addition, the Fire Department offers free CPR classes, station tours, <br />and general fire safety for the general public. <br />Firefighter Jaros announced the Fire Department annual open house on Saturday, October 11 `h <br />from 1:00-4:00 p.m. She stated the open house is a great opportunity to learn about fire <br />prevention and the open house will include tours of a fire truck and ambulance, an obstacle <br />course, and vehicle extrication demonstration, and there will be hot dogs and chips for everyone. <br />Mayor Faust expressed the City Council's thanks to Captain Fuller and Firefighter Jaros for their <br />presentation and also extended the City Council's thanks and appreciation to everyone on the <br />Fire Department. <br />
