Peters <br /> explained that he felt constrained by the fact that <br /> Signcrafters was the lowest bidder. He added that at this <br /> time the side wall is stuccoed and painted but that no fascia <br /> has been erected. <br /> No one else was present to speak either for or <br /> against the variance and the hearing was clossed at 8 : 20 p.m. <br /> Planning Commission Reaction <br /> Commissioner Franzese stated that she strongly opposed <br /> granting the variance. She observed that since the time when <br /> she voted in favor of three other variances for second—i-:n r; <br /> signs, one for the bookstore, one for a tanning salon, and <br /> one for the sewing center, the neighborhood has become more <br /> residential in nature. She commented that the City has <br /> waited a long time for the remodeling of the shopping center <br /> and that since it has been finally accomplished it should be <br /> maintained with a certain degree of integrity. She voiced <br /> the opinion that bigger and more signs detract from each <br /> other as well as the appearance of the shopping center <br /> itself . She expressed puzzlement as to why attention was not <br /> given to both portions of the business when the opportunity <br /> presented itself at the time the signage on the front of the <br /> store was being selected. She voiced the opinion that that <br /> corner of the shopping center would be visible to residents <br /> in new apartments being built, and that signage in that area <br /> should be kept to a minimum in consideration of those <br /> apartment residents . <br /> Commissioner Wagner voiced opposition to <br /> granting the variance on the grounds that the Commission has <br /> already established that no more signage would be added to <br /> the shopping center once a full sign proposal was submitted <br /> and accepted. <br /> Chair Madden asked- whether the library was <br /> required to obtain a variance for their two signs . 1 <br /> O' - i �n3 '� c Cat ': t, '-de <br /> re=air:. <br /> Chair Madden expressed the opinion that the <br /> Petitioner was justified in comparing his store to the <br /> library, and that the owners of the shopping center might <br /> have made a better decision had they wrapped the fascia <br />
