1 Engstrom Named Officer of the Year by Fridley Knights of Columbus <br /> 2 Mayor Sundland said he had attended the appreciation dinner where <br /> 3 the BVM Council of the Knights of Columbus had honored Captain <br /> 4 Richard Engstrom as St. Anthony' s Officer of the Year. The Mayor <br /> 5 reported that in addition to the award, Captain Engstrom had been <br /> 6 given a choice of charities to whom. the Knights would donate <br /> 7 $150 . 00. He said he had been impressed when the recipient chose <br /> 8 to split the donation between the Red Cross and the Salvation Army <br /> 9 because both organizations "had given so much help to the St. <br /> 10 Anthony community after the 1984 tornado. " <br /> 11 Mayor Sundland asked Councilmember Ranallo, who is Grand Knight of <br /> 12 the Fridley Knights of Columbus Council, to convey his own and the <br /> 13 rest of the Council' s gratitude for this recognition of the City <br /> 14 Police Department. <br /> 15 Makowske Perceives North Suburban Mayors Association Responsible for <br /> 16 Area Plug in Travel Magazine <br /> 17 Councilmember Makowske passed around a copy of the latest AAA travel <br /> 18 guide which touted the north Minneapolis area as a good vacation <br /> 19 choice, saying she suspected this might be one of the first efforts <br /> 20 by the Association to gain more recognition for the northern <br /> 21 metropolitan area. In the same regard, Mayor Sundland reported <br /> 22 arrangements have been made to have Brooklyn Park Mayor Krautkremer <br /> 23 appear before the Council in February to lobby support for an • <br /> 24 increased Association budget to continue those efforts . <br /> 25 Ranallo Reports Busy Schedule for Gopher One Call System Board <br /> 26 Members <br /> 27 The Board of Directors for the above organization has been very <br /> 28 active, Councilmember Ranallo said, setting up and taking bids for <br /> 29 this legislative mandated system. The organization is responsible <br /> 30 for identifying all underground utility, natural gas and oil lines <br /> 31 and providing such information to anyone who seeks permission to dig <br /> 32 anywhere in the state, thereby avoiding ruptures similar to that <br /> 33 which occurred in MoundsView. The Councilmember said the Board on <br /> 34 which he serves have been meeting with representatives of the area' s <br /> 35 utility companies in an attempt to computerize all available grid <br /> 36 information. However, the problem still remains to identify <br /> 37 underground lines like the gas line the City encountered when they <br /> 38 were rebuilding St. Anthony Boulevard which no one knew anything <br /> 39 about. Even gas grills which residents put. in, with or without the <br /> 40 gas company' s knowledge, pose special problems for the system, he <br /> 41 added. The Board is now ready to take bids on the system and the <br /> 42 Councilmember indicated he anticipated there would be a lot of <br /> 43 activity from now on starting with an informational meeting in Grand <br /> 44 Rapids the following day. <br /> 4 • <br />
