RECYCLING TASK FORCE MEETING NOTES • July 18 , 1988 The meeting began at 7 :06 P.M. Those present were Dick Enrooth, Larry Hamer, Lauren McClanahan, Keith Pearson, Vickie Osborne, Martin Lunde, and Elaine Olson. Mr. Enrooth outlined the tasks for the meeting: *compare all proposals; *make recommendations to the Council for their August 9th .meeting; *select a spokesperson to present the findings to the Council; *make final comments. Mr. Enrooth entertained comments about the tour of Reuters. Vickie Osborne said that the tour was very educational and that she was impressed with the methods of separating recyclable materials. .Keith Pearson was also impressed with the Reuters operation and the -: technology that they have in equipment in their operation. Dick Smooth commented that the equipment used at Reuters to • separate materials represented a major investment and they looked to be in business for the long haul. Lamar Hamer was also impressed with their technology but had concerns about Reuters ability to serve St. Anthony with recycling and solid waste pick up. Reuters submitted their proposal quite late the final day (July 18, 1988 ) and the distance they had to travel was considerable. Items relating to Reuters: >they were negotiating with 4 cities but they are allowed by law to. process only 400 tons per day. Their plant is capable of processing 800 tons per day. They are ' now processing approxi- mately 150 tons per day. >The fuel pellets Reuters makes have not been proven safe to burn, political considerations might be involved. >The County will not recognize the percentage of recyclable materials extracted. If Reuters were chosen, the City could lose grant money. >Reuters was not very receptive to source separation at the curb nor solid waste being hauled to them. • >There are also some political problems connected with Reuters.
