pEarth Day 1990
Minnesota's Celebrate Earth Day 1990 Committee has identified specific needs they have
heard expressed by Minnesotans in order to successfully implement a major program for
Earth Day 1990. Through meetings during the past six months, representatives of
environmental organizations, educational groups and public agencies have agreed to work
in the following areas:
• Resources: In Minnesota, schools, clubs, religious organizations, and community
groups are already planning activities for Earth Day 1990—ranging from one day
events to dedication of the entire school year to the environment. Enthusiasm and
dedication is high! What they need are speakers; tours; displays and demonstrations;
and suggestions for activities and projects. The Celebrate Earth Day 1990 Committee
plans to provide them with information on all of these.
• Special Events: An "Ecology Bus" to take water quality projects to students, concerts
to benefit the environment; conferences and symposiums; Arbor Month tree
plantings; and numerous other events will be developed for Minnesota. We are
working with the national organizations, like "Earth Day 1990" and "Celebration of
the Outdoors." For example, we hope to be promoting the pledge and resolution
project of "Earth Day 1990;' probably using the 'Say YES to the Environment"
campaign suggested by Jack Ditmore to team with "Earth Day 1990" to get their pledge
signed through schools and communities.
• Communications: There is no lack of environmental activity going on in Minnesota
— only a lack of general public knowledge about how individuals and groups can
participate! The Celebrate Earth Day 1990 Committee.plans to provide information on
resources, national activities, state and regional events, and opportunities through
the network of organizations we are developing and through the media. Of special
interest, we are working with the State Planning Agency to utilize their DataNet
System to create an extensive year-long environmental calendar and resource
database available to every corner of Minnesota through a computer/modem system.
• Volunteers: Individuals and groups are contacting us daily seeking ways they can
assist and participate in Earth Day 1990. We are assisting them to find ways to link to
the numerous existing organizations and programs so that they can find a
meaningful — and ongoing way to participate in Earth Day and continue to work in
environmental protection.
• Future Issues: In the near future, we hope to develop plans for a major Earth Day
activity or event that every Minnesotan can participate in; to research whether major
corporate funding is needed for specific Earth Day projects; and to develop other
communications and coordination tools.
For more information about how you can participate in any of these programs, contact
Celebrate Minnesota 1990.
Celebrate Minnesota 1990
900 American Center Building • 150 East Kellogg Boulevard • Saint Paul,MN 55101 612/297=1990
