Due to budgetary constraints, the MTC's shelter <br /> development program was suspended in 1982. <br /> At present, the MTC maintains 628 passenger waiting shelters throughout the <br /> metropolitan area. Federal funding is now available to assist in building an <br /> additional 89 shelters. Local money must be used to fund 20% of the <br /> construction costs of the shelter program and to fund ongoing maintenance <br /> costs. <br /> The MTC shelter policy encourages the siting of passenger waiting shelters for <br /> bus stops which serve forty or more boarding or transferring passengers on a <br /> typical weekday, with special consideration given to bus stops serving the <br /> elderly and the handicapped. <br /> Under the MTC's shelter program, the MTC will pay the total cost of the <br /> shelter installation if ridership is more than forty passenger boardings per day. <br /> In cases where ridership is less than forty passengers per day, the MTC will <br /> consider the shelter installation only if the community provides a portion of the <br /> local capital and maintenance,.,costs. Providing a concrete base pad upon which <br /> .the shelter could be placed, and agreeing to provide minor maintenance such as <br /> cleaning, would be ways in which the community could provide this local capital <br /> and maintenance cost sharing. <br /> If you are interested in pursuing bus shelters for your community, we would <br /> seek your input on the following issues: <br /> 1. Potential shelter sites in your community; <br /> 2. whether your city would be interested in participating in a <br /> cost-sharing arrangement with the MTC for the local share of the <br /> construction costs and ongoing maintenance of shelters. if a desired <br /> site does not have the minimum of forty passenger boardings on the <br /> average weekday; and <br /> 3. whether your community would be receptive to allowing advertising <br /> to be placed on MTC bus shelters as a means of providing a funding <br /> source to offset a portion of the ongoing maintenance costs of the <br /> shelters. <br />
