Mr. Tom Burt
May 30, 1990
Page 2
Based on the MTC's shelter siting guidelines, the MTC has identified the
following site in your community as a potential location for a bus shelter.
Silver Lake Road and Trunk Highway 88
We would like to receive your comments concerning the placement of a bus
shelter at this location, as well as receive input from you regarding other sites
that you believe would be good shelter locations in your city.
In addition, the MTC believes that the revenue generated from advertising on
bus shelters would substantially offset the cost of bus shelter maintenance. In
1989, the MTC spent approximately $600,000 for ongoing maintenance and
repair of passenger waiting shelters.
Minnesota Statutes 160.27, Subd. 2, provides that the decision to allow the
placement of shelters with advertising on public right-of-way rests with the
road authority in which the shelter is located. Specifically, this statute provides
that advertising may be placed on shelters if authorized by the road authority
through permit, license or franchise.
The MTC is interested in exploring with your city the possibility of placing
advertising on bus shelters to help defer the high cost of ongoing shelter
maintenance and repair. Vi'e would need to discuss whether your city would be
receptive to bus shelter advertising and the terms and conditions for permitting
advertising in your jurisdiction.
At this point, I believe it would be appropriate to schedule a meeting between
the city and MTC staff to discuss the issues outlined in this letter. Please
contact my Executive Assistant, Greg Failor at 349-7501, to schedule the
meeting.
I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.
ncerely,
L
ohn J. pell
Chief Administ for
JJC/dmk
cc: Mayor Clarence Ranallo
N1TC Commissioners
