APPENDIX B: COMMUNITY OPINION SURVEY
On September 2, 1991, a Community Opinion Survey, an-orange colored insert in the City of Columbia
Heights Newsletter, was sent to the residents of Columbia Heights. As of October 8th,.895 (11%) of
the 8,150 surveys sent out had been returned. Note: For a target group in excess of 4,000, a sample
size of 384 is the minimum number of surveys required for a valid statistical analysis.
Summary
A majority of residents, who responded to the survey, feel that their own neighborhood is a good place
to live and raise children, crime is not a serious problem, and that Columbia Heights has a very good
quality of life and a strong sense of community. However, many residents think that the quality of life
has not improved during the last decade and that Columbia Heights needs to improve its image,
especially deteriorating commercial/ industrial buildings and housing--96 percent support enforcement
of regulations that would require owners to properly maintain houses or apartments.
Most citizens are generally satisfied with the City's services and facilities and feel they are worth the
taxes they pay. Eighty percent of the residents feel more jobs are in needed in Columbia Heights and
that the City should spend more money on attracting new businesses, redeveloping deteriorated
commercial buildings and renovating housing.
0425 B-1
