Physical Plan
The Traffic and Transit System Plan for Columbia Heights includes roads for cars and trucks, a planned
light rail transit (LRT) system line, and bus lines.
No major changes are planned in the roadway system in Columbia Heights since the community's
roadway system is fully developed and no changes are-expected in the land use pattern that would
significantly affect the distribution of vehicle trips.
The plan for roadways illustrated by Figure 5 reflects the functional classification plan of the Anoka
County 2010 Comprehensive Transportation Plan (1990).
The City supports the proposal reflected in the Anoka County Transportation Plan'to transfer jurisdiction
for the portions of University and Central Avenues Columbia Heights to Anoka County from the
Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Figure 5 also shows the proposed -alignment of a light rail transit line that would, if constructed, run
between downtown Minneapolis and Northtown Shopping Center. Three stations(park-and-ride sites)
are being considered in Columbia Heights, although it is expected that one of them will be deleted
during the Preliminary Engineering phase in 1992-1993. If the LRT'system were built, the bus system
lines would be adjusted to bring passengers to the rail stations.
09425 43
