In order to achieve a balanced program for all of its citizens, <br /> Columbia Heights may have to restructure some of the activities within the parks should this trend <br /> continue. <br /> Also, while the geographic distribution of parks throughout the City is basically uniform, the residential <br /> area north of 40th Avenue NE and west of Central Avenue lacks a convenient neighborhood park. <br /> However, a community playfield and a neighborhood park are each within 1/2 mile of the center of this <br /> neighborhood, which is a reasonable maximum distance. In summary, another neighborhood park of 3 <br /> to 5 acres would be helpful in the area bounded by 40th, 45th, Central and universities Avenues. <br /> Trails <br /> Currently, the City of Columbia Heights has a very limited trail system. Short, perimeter paths around <br /> the lakes in Sullivan, Kordiak and LaBelle Parks are the only recreational trails within the City. <br /> Park Issues <br /> The following issues have been identified as matters which need resolution by the Comprehensive Plan <br /> for Columbia Heights: <br /> • Do the existing parks provide sufficient_facilities to meet the community's recreation needs? <br /> • Are the existing facilities in each park appropriate for the neighborhood it is located in? <br /> • Should the facilities in the neighborhood parks be modified to accommodate the change in <br /> residential climate? <br /> • Can the City afford to allocate revenue sufficient to upgrade and maintain its current park system? <br /> • What role should local parks play in strengthening the City of Columbia Heights community image`! <br /> 09425 51 <br />
