COMMUNITY IMAGE
ANALYSIS OF CONDITIONS
The City of Columbia Heights, like many neighboring communities, would benefit from better definition
of its edges and entryways as well as a better sense of a downtown or city core. With major entrances
to the City not clearly marked, Columbia Heights seemingly becomes an extension of the Cities of
Minneapolis to the south, and Fridley to the north. This lack of identification, along with lack of a
distinct physical personality, influences residents' as well as outsiders' perceptions of the City as a
whole. These perceptions can form lasting impressions of the City's dedication to appearance, services
and quality of life. Figure 7 indicates the location of major issues affecting image.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The following are strengths and weaknesses of the existing community image of Columbia Heights.
Strengths
• Well-maintained residential neighborhoods, and an evident commitment to cleanliness and order.
• Variety in neighborhood character.
• Available recreational facilities provided at I-Iuset Park.
• Many tree-lined streets such as Reservoir Boulevard, Tyler and Polk Streets. Also, new
decorative lights along many streets.
19425 59
