NATIONAL REGISTER NONIINATIONS <br /> Representative Projects <br /> NOKOMIS KNOLL RESIDENTIAL HISTORIC DISTRICT, MINNEAPOLIS <br /> The five-block Nokomis Knoll subdivision in south Minneapolis was targeted at the <br /> middle- and upper-middle-income professionals and managers that emerged as a class in <br /> the early twentieth century. The historic district offers a well-preserved display of the <br /> period revival architectural styles popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Client: Minnesota <br /> Historical Society(SHPO). <br /> WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, MINNEAPOLIS <br /> This imposing stone edifice was built in 1898 on Nicollet Avenue, one of the primary <br /> streets in downtown Minneapolis. Counting many of the city's business and civic leaders <br /> as members of its congregation, the church has been a center of social service and <br /> community outreach since its doors first opened. Client: Westminster Presbyterian <br /> Church. <br /> PROSPECT PARK WATER TOWER, MINNEAPOLIS <br /> Built in 1914, the Prospect Park Water Tower reflects the movement to improve the <br /> city's infrastructure during the early twentieth century. Occupying the highest elevation <br /> in the city, the tower has become a local landmark popularly known as the "Witch's Hat" <br /> because of its conical roof. The nomination included the surrounding Tower Hill Park. <br /> Clients: Prospect Park East River Road Association, City of Minneapolis. <br /> VIRGINIA COMMERCIAL HISTORIC DISTRICT, MINNESOTA <br /> Virginia owed its early prosperity to lumbering and mining. The six blocks of early <br /> twentieth-century buildings along Chestnut Street form the downtown core of this <br /> regional commercial hub. Hess Roise completed an intensive-level survey of over one <br /> hundred buildings to determine the district's eligibility and establish its boundaries. <br /> Client: Minnesota Historical Society(SHPO). <br /> UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA SOUTHEAST STEAM PLANT,MINNEAPOLIS <br /> This coal-fired power plant, built between 1902 and 1904, first served as a backup for a <br /> nearby hydroelectric facility on the Mississippi River. The steam plant soon became the <br /> primary power source for the Twin City Rapid Transit Company. It now serves the <br /> district heating system of the University of Minnesota. Client: Minnesota Historical <br /> Society(SHPO). <br /> MAIN STREET, SAUK CENTRE, MINNESOTA <br /> Sauk Centre's Main Street served as the inspiration for Sinclair Lewis's novel of the <br /> same. name. The National Register analysis focused on issues of symbolic cultural <br /> landscapes.
