HABS/HAER DOCUMENTATION STUDIES
Representative Projects
SOUTH OMAHA UNION STOCK YARDS, OMAHA,NEBRASKA(HAER)
When the Union Stock Yards was founded in 1883, Omaha was a frontier town and
South Omaha was farmland. Soon, a lively complex of buildings and livestock pens
evolved, ultimately covering some 250 acres. Adjacent meatpacking plants, lured by
incentives offered by the stockyards, ensured steady demand for the livestock arriving by
the trainload from western ranges and Corn Belt farms. By 1955, Omaha passed Chicago
to become the world's busiest stockyards. Changes in technology, particularly
refrigeration and meatpacking, fostered Omaha's rise; technology, especially the motor
truck, was also responsible for its demise. The facility closed in 1999, ending a character
defining chapter in the region's history. Client: City of Omaha.
PROJECT LOOKING GLASS, OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, NEBRASKA
(HAER)
Named "Looking Glass" because it mirrored the capabilities of the Strategic Air
Command's underground facilities at Offutt, the mission maintained at least one specially
equipped EC-135 jet aircraft aloft twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, from 1961
through 1990. The epitome of Cold War strategy, the airborne command post guaranteed
that America could retaliate if the Soviets launched a first strike of nuclear weapons.
Client: National Park Service.
SUMNER FIELD HOMES, MINNEAPOLIS (HABS)
-Built in 1937 under the Public Works Administration, Sumner Field was Minnesota's
first low-income public housing project. It embodied the major characteristics of the era's
philosophy of public housing, such as garden apartment massing, low site coverage, and
the use of standardized unit plans. Client: Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.
BLUE WATER BRIDGE, PORT HURON, MICHIGAN (HAER)
Spanning the St. Clair River between Port Huron, Michigan, and Sarnia, Ontario, this
arched cantilever through truss bridge was designed by renowned engineers Modjeski
and Masters. When the bridge opened in 1938, it symbolized the peaceful relationship
between the United States and Canada, a sharp contrast to the ongoing hostilities in
Europe. Client: Michigan Department of Transportation.
RATH MEAT PACKING PLANT, WATERLOO,IOWA (HAER)
Now abandoned, this was once one of the nation's largest beef and pork processing
plants. The study included in-depth analysis of packinghouse technology and design.
Client: City of Waterloo Community Development Board.
JOYCE ESTATE, ITASCA COUNTY, MINNESOTA(HABS)
Located on Trout Lake in northern Minnesota, this elaborate Adirondack-style retreat was
established by a wealthy Chicago family. The compound's thirty-five structures were
mostly rustic log cabins. The property is now part of a national forest. Client: U.S. Forest
Service, Chippewa National Forest.
Hess,Roise and Company—The Foster House-100 N.First Street—Minneapolis,MN 55401-612-338-1987
