Childs, City Manager
I TEM : POLICE DEPARTMENT COMPUTERIZATION
As we discussed -at both -the annual goal setting session in February
and at the budget work sessions, the cost of both computer hardware
and police department specific software has decreased dramatically
in recent years. Several years ago, a system for our police
department would have cost in excess of $50,000. Now, the cost is,
more in the $15-17,000 range. If we could wait another 5 years, the
price and technology might make it even less expensive.
Unfortunately, we can't wait 5 more years.
Hardware
The School District could supply to us through their contract with
IBM an IBM PS-2 Model 60 with color monitor for $146 less than the
cost of the same items through the State of Minnesota contract (quote
attached) .
The School District prices, which are only good for 1988 are:
IBM PS-2 Model 60 with 70 MB hard drive $3 , 477
IBM Color monitor 357
IBM 3270 Emulation Software 228
Total $4,062
The Chief of Police recommends that the computer be purchased in 1988
with funds obtained from the following 1988 police budget areas:
454 Furniture and Fixtures $2 , 312 *(Typewriter update and radar
unit)
Special Police Account 975 (Receipts from confiscated
and auctioned items)
334 Printing and Publishing 775 (Delay some printing until
1989)
Total $4 ,062
*typewriter update is not needed if computer is purchased.
