13. Special hazards such as parades, road construction, etc. <br /> 14. The length of the chase; <br /> 15. The amount of assistance available; S <br /> 16. Whether there is a police helicopter or airplane monitoring the pursuit; <br /> 17. Whether one or more passengers other than sworn police officers are in the <br /> police vehicle. <br /> 4 - 816.4 PRIMARY UNIT RESPONSIBILITIES <br /> 1. An officer engaging in a pursuit shall notify the communications center <br /> as soon as reasonably possible, that a pursuit is underway and provide <br /> the following information, if available: <br /> A. Police Unit identification; <br /> B. Location, speed and direction of travel; <br /> C. Vehicle description, including license number, if known; <br /> D. The reason for the pursuit, including suspected law violations; and <br /> E. The number of occupants in the vehicle being pursued. <br /> 2. The primary pursuing officer shall be in charge of the pursuit unless <br /> releived of that responsibility by that officer's supervisor. <br /> 4 - 816.5 ASSISTING UNIT'RESPONSIBILITIES • <br /> 1. An assisting unit shall , if reasonably possible, notify the communications <br /> center upon actively joining the pursuit. <br /> 2. If the primary unit is a one-officer unit, the assisting unit may <br /> assume the responsibility to report the progress of the pursuit, <br /> allowing the primary unit to devote full attention to driving. <br /> 3. An assisting unit will maintain a reasonably safe distance behind the <br /> primary unit. <br /> 4. If the primary unit becomes disabled, the assisting unit may become the <br /> primary unit. <br /> 5. A pursuit will normally involve no more than two units. Additional <br /> units may be needed based on such factors as the nature of the offense, <br /> the number of suspects, and the character of the area. <br /> 6. Police units involved in the pursuit should not pass each other. <br /> 7. Units not actively involved in the pursuit shall monitor its progress <br /> but not become involved unless specifically directed to do so. <br /> 4 - 816.6 'COMMUNICATIONS' CENTER*RESPONSIBILITIES <br />' 1.
