Burt, City Manager
ITEM: REPORT FEES
Councilmember Makowske received a call regarding why the City
charges residents a fee for police reports.
In response to this query, the attached memo from Chief Engstrom
indicates the following salient points:
1. Fees of this nature are specifically permitted by state
statute (attached) to cover the costs for searching and
retrieving data. Although St. Anthony does not charge
residents to review a report at the office, recent state laws
allow cities to charge for this information.
2 . Residents are given receipts with their report and informed
that these fees are reimbursable from their insurance
companies.
3 . The City Council unanimously approved an increased fee for
both police and fire reports made effective November 1, 1987
(see attached October 13 , 1987 Council Minutes) .
This is a common charge in every community. I have scheduled this
for discussion at the August 28th Council meeting.
:cjk
•
