•
H E H 0 R A N D U H
DATE : August 16 , 1990
TO: Tom Burt, City Manager
FROM: Dick Engstrom, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Report Fees
-----------------------------------------------------------------
As per Minnesota Statute 13. 03 police agencies are permitted to
charge a fee for any copies of police reports. This fee is to
cover the cost of searching and retrieving data. The St. Anthony
Police department currently charges a fee of $5 . 50 for a copy of
any police report. Citizens are allowed to come in and review
these reports at no charge. This fee was set by the St. Anthony
City Council effective November 1 , 1987 . Previous to November 1st
the fee had been $3. 50.
• A survey of area police departments shows current fees at:
Columbia Heights $4 . 00 for every 10 pages
New Brighton $3 . 00
Roseville $4 .00
Minneapolis $3 . 00
New Hope $3. 00 for 1st page and $1 . 00 for
every page after
Brooklyn Park $3. 00 for 1st page and . 50 for every
page after
Robbinsdale $5 . 00 for 1st 2 pages and $1 . 00 for
every page after
Of the police reports requested , over 95% are for insurance
purposes ( theft, burglary, damage to property, accident, etc . ) .
The remaining 5% are from suspects or attorneys in regards to
criminal prosecution . Citizens are issued receipts with their
report and advised to turn them into their insurance companies for
reimbursement. It is estimated that we receive over 300 requests
per year for police reports .
Looking into the near future some area departments are beginning to
receive requests from " for profit" agencies wanting computer
printouts involving a multitude of police reports requiring many
hours of research.
