4®
MEMORANDUM -
DATE: August 16, 2001
TO: Mayor and Councilmembers
FROM: Michael Morrison, City Manager
SUBJECT: FIRE SERVICE AGREEMENT FROM THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS
Attached is information from the Minneapolis Fire Chief on a proposal to provide fire protection to the
City of St. Anthony. The Minneapolis Fire Chief presented this proposal to me and Chief Hewitt on
Wednesday, August V
The Chief of Minneapolis indicated that they are faced with budget cuts as are other communities
throughout the State and it was felt that having the Minneapolis Fire Department provide service to St.
Anthony could be of benefit to both communities. Minneapolis would provide the service out of Station
15, which is approximately 1'/2 minutes from St. Anthony's City limits. They have been talking about
closing Station 15 due to the low number of calls. They would have had to have another station service
that area.
In the proposal, the Minneapolis Fire Chief indicated that the cost to the City would be $400,000
annually for three years and could possibly add another two years for a total of five years at$400,000
per year. For future years, increases would be based on salary and benefit adjustments from the union
contracts. St. Anthony's fire budget for 2001 is $527,975 and for 2002 is $555,900.
Chief Hewitt is also present tonight to answer any questions Councilmembers may have.
