Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
March 13, 2000
Page 5
•
1 Additionally, Zurbey stated that he would report to the Sports Boosters the May 15 date that the
2 fields can be utilized at Silver Point Park.
3 On another issue, Jindra reported that the City Council has requested a joint meeting with the
4 Parks Commission. Public Works Director Jay Hartman responded that the meeting is
5 anticipated to be held in June 2000. Jindra elaborated that the meeting would be of an informal
6 nature where plans and issues could be discussed. She encouraged the Commissioners to have
7 items in mind to discuss. The meeting is anticipated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
8 Furthermore, Jindra mentioned that some homeowners located by the sirens in Central Park had
9 previously offered to sell their homes to the City when they were ready to move. Jindra sug-
10 gested that this would be an excellent issue to present to the City Council at the joint meeting.
1 t She also mentioned that acquiring land from willing sellers would be a possibility for Silver
12 Point Park as well.
13 On another issue, Ganley stated that he had spoken with John Marty about the availability of
14 funding from the State. He received the impression that the potential for funding is small. How-
15 ever, Mr. Marty did suggest approaching the DNR for funding for some trail systems.
Jindra reported that Commissioners Hallada and Koehntop had attended a conference on the
issue of community gardens. In this respect, Hallada distributed brochures obtained from the
18 conference and stated that the information presented was interesting and valuable. The
19 conference provided ideas for improvements in community areas through community gardens.
20 In reference to Water Tower Park, Jindra reviewed for the newest members that the Commission
21 had a contractual agreement with the general contractor to complete the park by a certain date.
22 The date was not met and, therefore, the Commission is entitled to liquidated damages under the
23 contract. Jindra stated that the funds from the liquidated damages could be utilized in the form of
24 additional play equipment and/or cash and could be used to improve any of the parks. _
25 In connection with the bathroom facilities for the parks, Jindra stated that satellites would soon
26 be installed. She asked if the Commission was interested in considering permanent bathrooms.
27 Vandalism of the satellites has been a problem and discussion ensued about ways to avoid
28 vandalism of the satellites as well as the potential permanent bathrooms.
29 Jindra suggested that an employee of the Public Works Department check on the satellites on a
30 regular basis to make sure good working order is maintained, or that the Public Works Depart-
31 ment arrange for the satellite company to check on the portable bathrooms on a regular basis.
32 VIII. REVIEW ST. ANTHONY SHOPPING CENTER REDEVELOPMENT WITH DICK
KRIER.
Jindra welcomed Dick Krier, Midwest Planning and Design, and invited him to address the Com-
35 mission.
