CITY OF ST. ANTHONY
REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL ACTION
-----------------------------------------
• Date Submitted Type of Action Requested Agenda Item Number
Resolution
April 22, 1982 Ordinance New Business- 2
Date Action Requested X Formal Action/Motion Title Change Order -
Other
April 27, 1982 Well #4 Repair
---------------------------------------------------
TO: Mayor and Councilmen
FROM: David Childs, City Manager
SUMMARY DISCUSSION OF SUBJECT: The- attached- memo describes the excessive cor-
rosion found in the well shafting and column pipes. The column pipes were not
expected to show as much corrosion as they did. We expected to replace the shaft
but comparing the life expectancy of stainless and carbon steel versus price, we
feel that the cost effective solution is to install stainless this time.
• FISCAL IMPACT: Additional costs above original plans are $4,518.00 for new
column pipes and $1 ,012.50 for the additional cost of stainless shafting over carbon
steel . -The repairs to the pump were about $1 ,800 to $2 ,000 less than expected but
the column pipes were not scheduled for replacement.
ALTERNATIVES :
1 . Replace the shafting with carbon steel (life expectancy 5 years) .
2. Replace the shafting with stainless steel (life expectancy nearly unlimited) .
3• Not replacing column pipe (life expectancy 2-5 years with risk of having column
drop into bottom if corrosion continues faster than expected) .
4. Replacing column pipe (life expectancy 10 .years to 15 years for the,,upper 115
feet and approximately. five- or. more years for the lower 65 feet) .
RECOMMENDATION: Replace 18' sections of column pipe at $4,518 and use stain-
less shafting to make necessary repairs at $1 ,012.50. The funds would come from the
water reserves and a motion is necessary to approve the changes.
CI;17Y MANAGER' S REVIEW: COMMENTS :
