MEMORANDUM DATE: April 20 , 1982 • TO: Dave Childs , City Manager FROM: Larry Hamer, Public Works Director SUBJECT: Well 44 Progress Report --------------------------------------------------------------- Well #4 was pulled the week of April 1 , 1982 . There was a considerable amount of corrosion on the column pipe and pump shafts . In the past, the lower 65 feet of column and shafting (.which is in the water) cor- rodes to a very large degree. When the well was pulled 5 years ago, the City had to .replace this 65 feet of column and shaft. Fifteen feet of, the shafting replaced 5 years .ago was stainless steel and shows no signs of corrosion. (.1) The well was measured and it was found that there is about 12 feet of fill present. This would amount to about a yard of fill and is not an appreciable amount at this time , removal of fill should be planned for the next time the pump is pulled. (2) The shafting appears to be in good condition , with the exception of the bottom 50 feet. If this shaft is replaced with steel, as we have in the past , the cost will be $835 . 50 . Installation of 50 feet of stainless steel shafting with couplings would cost $1 , 854 . 00 , but would not be subject to corrosion. In other words , installing with stainless steel would mean an additional $1,012 .50 over and above the $835. 50 for steel, but would have a nearly unlimited life expectancy. RECOMMENDATION Recommend a change order to install stainless steel shafting in the bottom 50 feet of Well #4 to prevent frequent replacement. - (3) The column pipe was inspected on the site by a Layne Minnesota representative and myself. The only section appearing to need replacement at that time was the tail piece. After Layne removed the column pipe from the location site to sandblast and recoat it, I received a call from them informing me they found 18 ten foot sections needing replacement. I then inspected the column my- self and confirmed the deficiencies . The cost of the 18 ten foot sections ,o s , with couplings , amounts to $4 , 518.00 . RECOMMENDATION Recommend a change order to replace the column pipe (couplings included) for $4 , 518. 00 . Total repair costs with both change orders approved* $13 ,262 . 50 • Total Repair costs without stainless steel shafting $ 7 ,727 . 50 and without replacement of 18 sections of column pipe and couplings* *less motor cost
